“What, we might wonder, would he have made of Agnes Owens?”
“A Working Mother is, in part, so singular in tone because Owens distributes weight to events with curious evenness.”
“At work as a typist for a legal firm, Betty is confronted by a woman in more desperate straits than her own.”

“Kelman, like Owens, refused the characterization of his work depicting life among the Scottish working class as something exhilaratingly foreign to the presumed reader.”
“When James Kelman won the Booker Prize in 1994, the decision was met with disgust by the literary establishment, appalled by the profanity and the informality of the Glasgow drunk whose inner life the novel details.”
